On March 24 2015, former Bike Winnipeg director Stéphane Dorge (OSBRA Volunteer) presented his Provencher Boulevard Protected Bike Lane Project to the Old St. Boniface Residents’ Association (OSBRA). The project envisions a reinvigorated Provencher Boulevard that provides all users of the road safe, convenient and comfortable passage through Old St. Boniface whether they choose to walk, bike, bus, or drive. Stéphane’s plan would see a narrowing of the median on Provencher Boulevard to make room for the parking protected bike lanes placed between the existing sidewalks and on street parking. Unique for Winnipeg, protection for people on bikes would be continued through intersections following standards for protected intersections that have been developed in the Netherlands over the last 30 years. Since that first presentation in March 2015, Stéphane has gathered support from 50 businesses / organizations & 570+ petition signatories.

“Provencher Boulevard has always been held as the heart of Old Saint Boniface, We are working to transform this transportation corridor into a corridor of public life where all modes of transportation are better integrated so that safety is increased for all road users” noted Dorge.

Provencher Parking Protected Bike Lane Removes Stress
For people travelling on bike, the parking protected bike lanes will remove the stress of mixing with traffic and open up new opportunities to bike to and from the many thriving businesses along Provencher. Improved bicycle and pedestrian connections between Provencher and Esplanade Riel will create opportunities for businesses along Provencher to benefit from the crowds generated by nearby Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Forks National Historic Site.
Plan Receives Unanimous Support from Residents Association
Stéphane’s presentation was well received by those in attendance, and a motion to adopt the project was unanimously supported by the OSBRA. Stéphane is continuing his hard work on the project, and is planning to present his concept for parking protected bike lanes along Provencher to all the community stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to move this inspiring project forward.
